Cable companies Comcast Corp. and Insight Communications Co. Inc. have agreed that Comcast will take over virtually all of the territory in Indiana now managed by Insight, the companies said this week.

The transition, which will take place at an unspecified date late this year, includes Insight customers from Anderson to Bloomington to Lafayette. Insight has more than 260,000 cable customers in the Indianapolis area, including in Fishers, Noblesville, Lebanon and Anderson.

Insight will retain the Evansville area.

Philadelphia-based Comcast is buying the 50-percent stake in the Insight Midwest partnership it hadn’t inherited through its 2002 acquisition of AT&T Broadband. Until now, Comcast has been a passive investor.

Comcast now will own and manage the entire territory. The territory, which also includes areas of northern and central Illinois, covers 684,000 basic cable customers, 296,000 digital cable customers and 300,000 high-speed Internet customers.

Insight, headquartered in New York, gained full control of the partnership that covers Evansville, Kentucky and Columbus, Ohio.

Insight customers with email accounts will likely have to change their email addresses, although Comcast said it anticipates making no changes to prices, billing or services.
