Philip Cochran has been named to replace Roger Schmenner as head of Indiana University’s business school at IUPUI.

Schmenner, who led the program for nine years, will remain on the faculty and help IUPUI Chancellor Charles Bantz with special projects.

As associate dean for the school, Cochran, a professor of business management and philanthropic studies, will lead a growing department with 950 undergraduate and 500 graduate students as well as 49 faculty. An additional 1,000 MBA students are taking courses online.

The school also offers its Main Street Institute seminars through the Greater Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce.

Cochran said he is excited about growth in business training of medical and law students.

The program also is experiencing an unexpected swell of interest in its MBA program in Carmel. A new MBA cohort starting at a Carmel location this fall filled quickly, and will likely add 40 to 50 graduates to the 300 who graduate annually from the IUPUI campus.

The interest has sparked “very informal” discussions internally about launching a fourth cohort, Cochran said. Potential might exist for a second Carmel cohort or an initial cohort on the south side, he said.

However, faculty are teaching overloads to accommodate the third cohort. So, an expansion would mean hiring faculty.
