Stephen Goldsmith has taken a director position of a new infrastructure finance and investment group created by Capital Source, a Chevy Chase, Md., investment and asset management group. The new unit will buy and finance long-term transportation, utility and recreation assets in the United States, Capital Source said today.

During two terms as Indianapolis mayor from 1992 to 1999, Goldsmith became a household name in national privatization circles for putting management of wastewater and other services out to competitive bids.

Aiding the process was Gov. Mitch Daniels, then an executive at Eli Lilly and Co. Daniels headed a blue-ribbon panel that offered recommendations on bidding. Daniels last year spearheaded the $3.8 billion lease of the Indiana Toll Road to the Spanish infrastructure giant Cintra SA and Australian bank Macquarie.

Goldsmith, who has held domestic policy positions in the Bush administration, teaches at Harvard University.
