Subscribe NowA consultant told business leaders in the Evansville area Tuesday that they should pounce on the chance to build an intermodal facility where freight containers can be exchanged between railroads and trucks, and do it before Terre Haute follows through on desires to launch a similar project.
Morley and Associates business development director John DiDomizio noted Gibson County is looking for a developer even as Terre Haute is discussing building a facility that would steal away the market, according to the Evansville Courier & Press.
Gibson County is near the median center of the nation’s population and has CSX and Norfolk Southern railroad networks, DiDomizio said. Growing coal and ethanol industries also are attracting investment in transportation.
Officials in Vigo County, where Terre Haute is the seat, are discussing building an intermodal on 1,450 acres at an abandoned coal mine east of the city to capitalize on Interstate 70, CSX and Indiana Rail Road Co. railroads, and Terre Haute International Airport.
Intermodals are considered major economic development projects that often resulting in hiring thousands of workers and opening transportation options to existing and prospective companies.
