The Indianapolis Cultural Development Commission today approved funding intended to pay for a public art display of Chakaia Booker sculptures in Indianapolis next year. The commission gave the Arts Council of Indianapolis the OK to pull $85,000 from this year’s budget and committed to approving another $165,000 from 2008’s budget for the project.

The council is still in talks with the New York-based artist, who creates abstract sculptures from steel frames and cut tires.

But Booker is already beginning production on what likely will be eight or nine oversized, original pieces for the Indianapolis show that has a tentative debut date of late May, according to Mindy Taylor Ross, the council’s director of public art. The works would likely stay in the city until April 2009.

Booker has met with an Indianapolis historian to learn more about important African American locals including entrepreneur Madam C.J. Walker and R&B musician Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds to inspire her works.

Ross said the final locations are still being worked out, but might include pieces in Circle Centre mall, near the Madame Walker Theatre Center and throughout downtown.
