Lumina Foundation for Education today named Jamie Merisotis as CEO of the Indianapolis-based not-for-profit.

Merisotis, 43, is founding president of the Washington D.C.-based Institute for Higher Education Policy, a research and policy center.

He replaces Martha Lamkin, who will retire at the end of this year.

Lumina, which has $1.4 billion in assets, advocates reforms to make college more affordable, and accessible, to high school graduates, as well as to adults who want to return to school.

Merisotis has experience testifying before both state and national lawmakers, a role he’ll likely continue as Lumina’s leader.

Lumina said Merisotis is an expert on higher-education finance, federal student financial aid, private scholarships and student loans.

Merisotis helped form the Alliance for Equity in Higher Education, a coalition of national groups assisting African Americans, Hispanics and Native Americans.
