Subscribe NowBrent Waltz, a Republican who unseated long-time state Senate Finance Committee Chairman Larry Borst in 2004, is under attack by a primary election challenger who claims Waltz lives outside his district.
Waltz lives at his parents’ White River Township home in Johnson County rather than at a condominium he leases in Greenwood, according to a challenge filed with the state election commission by Greenwood resident Mike Beeles.
The challenge was reported today by the Daily Journal of Franklin.
Waltz uses the condo address for his election paperwork, driver’s license and other official business, but neighbors say the unit appears to be empty. The unit used an average of $17 a month in electricity last year, enough to run a refrigerator, Duke Energy told the newspaper.
Waltz was quoted by the newspaper as saying he arrives home late and leaves early, and that he keeps the temperature low. He also sometimes stays at the Columbia Club downtown when he has early meetings during legislative sessions.
The election commission might meet after Feb. 29 to hear Beeles’ arguments.
In his two years in the Senate, Waltz has voted for bills the Indiana Chamber of Commerce considers important to the business community 87 percent of the time, the chamber told IBJ.
The 36th District that Waltz represents stretches between downtown and the south side of Greenwood.
