Toyota Motor Corp. said today it will stop making Tundra pickup trucks at its plant in Princeton and consolidate production at its new pickup plant in San Antonio.

The Indiana plant, which opened 10 years ago, instead will begin assembling the Highlander mid-size sport-utility vehicle in fall 2009. Toyota planned to make the Highlander at a plant scheduled to built in Mississippi; that plant now will make the Prius hybrid.

Princeton will shut down production of the Tundra and Sequoia full-size sport-utility vehicle from Aug. 8 until early November, the Japanese automaker also said. None of the 4,500 workers will be laid off as a result of the changes.

In addition to the Tundra and Sequoia, the plant assembles the Sienna minivan. Toyota reported no anticipated change in Sienna production.

Rising gas prices have forced Toyota and other automakers to emphasize fuel-efficient vehicles at the expense of such gas-guzzlers as the Tundra and Sequoia.
