  1. Do they even have Lyft or Uber in Berne? Instead of removing them from responsibility, maybe those companies should screen who they sign up as drivers???

  2. Shame. But, apparently, the art of the deal is to protect corporations. Profits over people. Make Indiana business friendly,

Sad and shameful that someone died so tragically at the vile hand of a ‘private contractor’ and to add insult to injury the perp get off light with 45 years — for a murder and rape! Excellent plea deal . . . a deal option that should not exist. Murder deserves no leniency, period.

  3. Bad idea. Without Uber, the potential crime scenario would not exist, so they should be accountable. I guess when injured or assaulted the victims only recourse is to go after the deep pockets of the driver. What is happening in our government?

  4. These companies have a reputation for poor screening and time and time again have been shown to be lax in responding to complaints about drivers. I recently read a NY Times article about an Uber driver that had several complaints and only stopped after he was finally arrested after he assaulted a 16 year old girl.

This is lobbyist money at work here.

  5. Dropping the liability just opened the door to hire anyone that applies with no ramifications for their inaction. Next we will indemnify anyone who hires third parties like DoorDash, Amazon, etc. If something happens then they just get to say; “Not My Problem” and walkaway with no liability or responsibility.

  6. Maybe the cost could be split between the company and the independent contractor, but the contractor needs to carry an insurance policy as well.
I hate to pay to house a sick animal like that driver for 45 years. Maybe a short Uber ride to a veterinarian who could put him down peacefully!

    1. Yes, and soon they won’t need to even bother to care about who they allow to drive on their platform with this new legislation from the General Assembly of Corporate Stooges and Shills that pretends to care so deeply about “ordinary Hoosiers,” but exists solely to serve the corporate overlords.

Nonetheless, the voters keep putting these clowns in office, election after election, so I guess the joke is on them.

    1. The only people willing to be Uber/Lyft drivers in Berne would probably not pass a basic background screen. If the liability to the company is removed, both companies will probably be able to find a driver or two in Berne, since they will no longer need to screen drivers. It is insane how much our legislators value corporations over individuals. Nearly every instance where it is a choice between a corporation or an individual citizen, the corporation wins.
