making Indiana roads the worst in the Midwest, necessitating much higher taxes for the next governor and legislature for “catch-up funding”, while increasing repair costs for Hoosier cars and trucks and a booming business cycle for tire stores, will always be his primary goal.
Since hybrids and RVs are charged a fuel tax surcharge annually when registering a car, will these surcharges also be reduced or will Indiana continue to reward those that drive vehicles with low gas mileage? It is great that the state has a surplus on the budgeted fuel taxes but we should be using this opportunity to accelerate fixing I-70, especially on the east side, and other road and bridge infrastructure that is past due for repairs. By keeping fuel costs higher, it will also have more considering, building and providing alternative modes of transportation, in preparation for the inevitability of more expensive gasoline and diesel.
This decision also seems to fly in the face of the effort to put tolls on I-70 to fund repairs and upgrades.
about an hour after this post yesterday, I received a text from a business associate from Tennessee traveling the interstate in southern Indiana on her way to Kansas for vacation. She wanted to know why Indiana had such lousy highways. Bounced them and their motorcycles in the trailer they were towing all over the road. I replied advising Indiana Republicans prefer lousy roads, as well as second rate public services, if it lets them have lower taxes. And, its good for the tire shops and auto repair companies…
The savings will go towards the annual alignment needed due to the lousy roads.
What a lousy short-sighted move.
Now the stations need to drop their prices. It was $3.99 at one station and $4.69 at another 3 blocks down. Price Gouging?
