    1. That’s what I thought and they said they ranked 850 cities so I don’t know how Gary is 857.

  1. Three of the top 20 cities in the nation are in Hamilton County, Indiana. It’s extraordinary that the suburbs of the Indy region have managed to perform at a level above the suburbs of even our most prestigious aspirational peers.

Hamilton County, along with Zionsville and parts of the far North Side of Indianapolis, have built the only places of scale in the state of Indiana that are genuinely competitive at the national level. External rankings like US News validate this.

Businesses lead in the market with their strongest products. But our state and regional economic development groups not only don’t lead with one of our strongest products, what we might call “North Indy,” they barely market it at all.

Except perhaps for the recent life science incentive fund announcement, there’s little obvious connection between the economic development vision outlined by the state and North Indy. This is a huge contrast with places like North Dallas or Williamson County outside Nashville, where there has been a focus on drawing in major white collar employers.

Our state and regional economic development groups need to checkpoint on what the most competitive assets we have to market are. North Indy would be on that and worthy of an aggressive marketing and sales effort by any measure.
