I’m disappointed that Meridian Village wasn’t identified as a redevelopment opportunity. The single story strip mall that used to be anchored by an O’Malia’s grocery story is more than 35 years old. Tenets have come and gone over the years. There are always several empty storefronts and the design is old and tired with no major facelifts having taken place in decades (or ever). With a large parking lot in front of the u-shaped mall there is plenty of space for a reimagined (mixed use?) design that would likely push the building(s) to front for better even better visibility from US31 and parking in the rear.
When I eat at Kona Jack’s that parking lot is mostly full. You have to have parking so I am not sure about what seems to be a new common theme that parking is wasted space. Even though a marketing point for all of these new apartments is that people want to walk everywhere, the reality is they don’t.
@Ind P. – Meridian Village is at 136th and US31. Kona Jacks is in the Meridian North Mall that, being south of 96th street, wouldn’t be part of what this article is addressing.
