I am for any primary system that would wrest control from the far right fringe of the GOP and the far left fringe of the Democrats. Right now, both fringe groups dominate their respecrtive party’s primary.
This is only bc primary turnout tends to be mostly the most partisan, politically active people. Not because of the way the primaries are conducted. If you want more moderates in office, get more moderates to vote in primaries.
I have lived downtown for years in a strongly blue district. When I used to consider myself a Republican (the party has shifted so far from my middle of the road beliefs) I would vote in the Democratic primaries in the hope of getting more middle of the road candidates. It was the only way I was going to have any say in the November election. I can see why any other thinking and concerned voters would do the same in a Republican primary.
If the Republicans can’t field candidates that will pass in an “open” primary, then I’m thinking they’re the ones with a problem and not the voters.
Additionally, if the belief is that Republicans need to protect “the integrity of the party” then they should foot the bill to keep their private club exclusive.
If the Republicans And Democrats have closed Primaries which is the same as a party convention . Then also conduct an open independent primary that every voter can vote in then a higher independent vote count determines the winner
