Data centers have avoided paying $655 million in sales tax to date but communities are supposed to be moved by a fraction of that in philanthropic commitments and property taxes that may or may not be spent back into the community? The majority of people aren’t stupid and know these are huge net negatives for their community. We know that thanks to the voices of those already struggling with the adverse effects to theirs. And yet some other IBJ commenters would have you believe these are great and the only alternative to even more destructive development. Please. That logical fallacy does not pass muster and falls apart at the slightest push back.
Why not place an infrastructure impact fee or donation on the data center developers that are approved that helps fund the $50M match needed to give to the state for infrastructure improvements.
Has anyone seen companies and dollars fleeing to Carmel and fishers and that Indianapolis needs to welcome investment. Without Mr simon spending his personal nest egg to support our city we would be hurting. Incentives are key to it all.
lol we literally have the world’s largest pharma company headquartered here. The city is doing just fine. The problem is the race to the bottom the a Republican supermajority is inflicting on us. If we give these companies huge incentives to build these, then much of the claimed community benefit becomes a wash and we’re better off without them.
Have you noticed the worlds largest pharma is spending billions developing projects outside of Indy?
The economic development game is played with incentives. It’s basically an auction. How much is the next guy willing to spend to get this, and can I afford to match it beat him.
Indy is preparing to place a $100 tax on every car. A $20 million community investment, as proposed, would cover a large portion of that.
This will be interesting, particularly considering everyone of note at IEDI is comically incompetent.
There is zero reason to subsidize datacenters. The race to “get in the marketplace” has zero benefits if without maximizing tax revenue.

We should be taxing AI to replace the tax revenue lost when AI replaces human workers that were pay taxes on doing the work taken from them by AI
