Tesla has been talking about autonomous driving for a decade at this point.
It’s something that has been and will be “close” for a good long time. It’s that last bit that’s needed … that is taking a long time, and might never happen. There’s a reason that Tesla’s stock dropped, and it’s not just because Waymo is operating in a few cities already. They’re in trouble.
To Chuck’s point, Musk has a history of over-promising and under-delivering. The Feds should slap them with a major financial fine for the Full Self Driving and Autopilot software – the names are a lie, and all they do is make human drivers not pay attention. It’s one thing to ship buggy software in the virtual world – to move fast and break a few things. When that attitude in the real world kills people, the hammer should be dropped. Maybe that’s one reason Musk is getting so political, so he can claim that any fine from the Feds is political persecution.
Autonomous driving is intriguing. Personal vehicles and truck, then buses perhaps.
If everyone could have an autonomous vehicle — those who cannot or should not drive — then individual access to all locations would increase dramatically. Just imagine shared autonomous vehicles that could be summoned in an app, deposit the user at a destination, then continue to a parking location or to another user.
However, when automation or aspect thereof fails and someone is killed or injured,, which party is responsible. Or, must users bear full responsibility (read: user insurance) through implied consent. Attention: use at your own risk signs may be required. Blunt information akin to statement such as “Skiing is inherently dangerous, you could dine” may be necessary. Of course, tests have show autonomous vehicles are safe and secure and result in fewer accidents than person-driven vehicles based on activity in limited market. A massive implementation throughout the nation would be required to gain better understanding.
Will autonomous vehicles become a proprietary technology and monopoly completely controlled by one company or individual with implicit or direct concurrence from the government or a representative thereof.
I wonder at what point society realizes Musk is a Maddof level fraud?
Maybe not Madoff, but at least a Theranos Elizabeth Holmes.
He’s no closer to real “Autonomous Driving” than we were 20 years ago – these are all nifty driver-assists.
The whole thing smells like a tech bubble designed to make sure we never get real mass transit and trains.
