Add to this there is some group pushing for all healthcare systems to have all of the speciaists they may need in their network. Not only is that an added expense, the reality is there are not suffcient number of specialists to allow for every healthcare network to have every possible specialist in their network. It is not financially or numerically possible for that to happen. Healthcare systems share specialists, even the biggest one’s are sometimes dependent on specialists from other systems / networks.

Should one be surprised that the Indiana Hospital Association has presented this narrative about challenges that “threaten their ability to provide services across the state?” The public may be wise to educate themselves on the Inter Governmental Transfer loophole that has allowed County hospitals in Indiana to drain billions of Medicaid dollars by “purchasing” nursing homes around the State. Many have used those dollars to acquire “extra” property for future expansions, build opulent facilities, add digital brand identity, etc. Meanwhile, the nursing home patients who could have benefitted, still suffer from a shortage of staff and more. Sorry, but I think they could learn to operate within the budget and rein in expenses, especially given their windfalls from that program.
I absolutely agree with you, Linda. These hospitals are opulent for sure, competing to see who can be the biggest. The extravagance of the new IU/ Methodist hospital is ridiculous spanning city blocks. We need to get back to basics and saving lives, not promoting how big or how much better one hospital is over another.
Those who actually deliver the care are paid significantly lower than the admin and C-Suite.
The “not for profit” game and who can be the largest provider is crushing patient care.
Don’t forget the insurance companies own the pharmacies, providers, and facilities indirectly.
