  1. If that money bought good bridge approaches I wouldn’t complain. But there are bridge approaches on the nearly-new I-69 in suburban Indianapolis where the dip is already significant.

The worst example in town by far is on the west leg of 465 southbound near the airport. And literally the whole length of I-70 east to the state line suffers from the problem as well.

What is it about INDOT bridge/overpass abutment specs that is noticeably worse than other those of other states?

    1. It sure feels like the INDOT “standards” are done in conjunction with the Build Indiana Council so that they continually have projects to work on. If the only metric is cost, one could be led to believe that they’re not using materials that would last longer.

    2. Chris, I always heard it is the ‘bents’ at the approach ends that cause the Indiana bridge bump.
Joe, your feeling is correct, designed and built to be obsolete so it can be redesigned and rebuilt again and again. That’s how the engineering campaign contributions also continue in perpetuity.

  2. I suspect a little bit of analysis might reveal that higher price tag reflects that all of these roads were completed in the mid to late 70’s meaning that all of them are now at the end of life and laying down some asphalt for routine maintenance no longer cuts it and that complete re-builds are now the name of the game.
