Nope. Our legislators are going to keep offering them $$$$ until they sign the deal.
Look at the bill, we offered to build a stadium for them for $1.
These same legislators whined about the LEAP district and all they’ve done is managed to make it look (comparatively) like good economic development.
Why haven’t we already done something similar this to get Michigan City’s closing NIPSCO plant & state prison cleaned up and ready for redevelopment?
Michigan City could be a top tier Lake Michigan beach town within 15 years. It is adjacent to Indiana Dunes NP; it has a beautiful city park on the water with a lighthouse, harbor, and beach; it’s on the South Shore Line; and because of its location at the southern end of the lake, summer water temps & air temps are ideal for recreation.
If we were to meaningfully redevelop the NIPSCO plant & the state prison, we’d be boosting Michigan City AND freeing half of Indiana’s shoreline from the type of industrial blight that keeps Great Lake tourists going to Michigan rather than Indiana. We have an opportunity to meaningfully improve the reputation of all of NWI.
There is probably a way to get the Bears to move to Indiana in such a way that doesn’t break the bank and that helps boost NWI’s broader image, but it’s unlikely that our Legislature and Governor will find that path. Clearly Indiana’s motivation to land the Bears is primarily motivated by spite for Chicago and/or an urge to use state power to please billionaires. It’s hard to believe that anything done with these motivations can actually help Hoosiers more than initiatives whose motivation is primarily rooted in helping Hoosiers.
Because that would require real foresight, which is generally lacking. Also, because the Bears’ lobbyists wrote this legislation and there’s no one both well-paid and well-connected to write legislation on behalf Michigan City. It’s unfortunate, but probably the case.

Even if this pipe dream were to come true, the Bears were willing to pay for the stadium in Illinois and just asked for infrastructure improvements. I know it would take an excessively good offer for even a remote chance of reality, but why would we offer to pay for and own the stadium? What I see is an empty and unused stadium at first opportunity for a Bears exit. They are far less likely to abandon a stadium they own. Find other ways to sweeten the deal.
Because if we (the taxpayers) own the stadium, the team doesn’t have to pay any property taxes.
This is a terrible deal for Indiana’s taxpayers. We will get nothing but being able to laugh at Illinois, and the only “jobs” we get will be some stadium maintenance jobs and a bunch of poorly-paid, part-time work around events.
Damn! If we could only get them moving this quickly on issues that really matter to their constituents!

You’re kind of proving Carl’s point, that we’re willing to transfer a billion dollars of Indiana taxpayer money to the Chicago Bears in order to “own the libs” in Illinois, regardless of whether it’s a good idea or will lead to any economic development.
That we have the collective will to quickly come up with a billion dollars for that, but we don’t have the will to do that for child care or education or roads or anything that matters to Indiana residents.
Politicians are only drawn to power plays and ego booste33rs!~ The heck with what makes sense or is good for the state.
So this new stadium authority issues bonds to buy the land and build the stadium. What revenue stream is used to pay off those bonds? That’s kinda important. Will any senators ask that question?
