There are many reasons this is not a good idea. If these 6-8th graders were proficient in 3rd grade, this solution falls far short of addressing the problem. There are likely several different reasons for the discrepancies, which deserve study and outlining.
Any for-profit reading intervention vendor will address a very limited part of the problem.
Asking for a certain length of time for the “contract” to prove its value is not fair to the current students who deserve to be helped this year.
There is something wrong with this picture. 13% of third graders were not proficient in reading, which then increases to 45% by 6th grade. What is needed is to hire contractors to determine the source of the issue and fix it via curriculum, teacher updates, material updates, etc. It is interesting that the State is asking for donations to pay for the contractors after cutting budgets for local schools.
