I wonder if he kept a straight face while claiming “infrastructure excellence” for Indiana’s roads. If he did, he must not have been driving the same roads as I have for the past 45 years.
Where are the republicans blaming democrats for increasing taxes at in this story’s comments? Yet another example that road funding, which the state governs the majority of, has been underfunded and unfairly distributed for decades now. Next time a Republican wants to blame a Democrat for their problems, talk to a wall.
There are 4 states doing a vehicle mile tax (VMT). Without GPS data collection, just counting miles penalizes people that drive a lot of out of state miles.
A couple of easy fixes: raise corporate taxes–their benefit from better roads is disproportionately higher than mine as a regular citizen; and: raise truck licensing fees–they’re already among the lowest in the nation, with accompanying high tonnage allowances. Bigger, heavier trucks are killing our roads, and truckers aren’t paying their fair share for that road damage.

Road damage is a geometric function of weight. So yes, big trucks should pay more, but also all-electric and hybrid passenger vehicles that weigh more than their internal combustion counterparts. (Curb weight on a Tesla Cybertruck is 6,500-6,900 pounds vs. a Ford F-150 at 4,000 to 5,700 pounds depending on capacity/style/trim.)
