Sounds like a good move! you still have to do two things government can control: 1) Improve K-12 education through support of vouchers; 2) Get a handle on violent crime by having someone successfully prosecute and incarcerate for long periods of time, violent felons!
Also, would love to see some concentrated music area similar to Broadway in Nashville.
Indianapolis has bet big on conventions and hosting big sporting events. That’s our thing. The city does it well, better than most, because of civic leadership that had the idea 50 years ago, made a big bet on it, and owned the space before anyone else thought about it. It’s still a competitive advantage though the NCAA is kind of squandering a fair chunk of it due to their abdication of leadership of college sports.
And it’s not the sort of thing we normally do in Indiana. When cities like Carmel bet big on place-making, we pass laws to make sure no other city does it. We are very much a state that, if someone tries to be unique or different or wants to stand out, we pull it back down and want it to do things the way they’ve always been done.
How exactly the city of Indianapolis got away with it, I’ll never know, but I don’t know that there’s the sort of civic leadership it would take to do something like that again. Times have changed and those lessons have been forgotten.
Copying what other cities do just ensures that we’re in second place. We aren’t going to out-Nashville Nashville.

Improve schools as noted to attract and maintain broad based of families.
Arresting crime (no pun). Will be more difficult. But vigilence an additional resources for the police now and improved job preparation and opportunities for the long- term will help.
While downtown may impress, the poor — very poor — infrastructure in too much of the city will not. No sidewalks, decimated tree canopr, unpaved alleys, street lighting on wooden poles, traffic signals on span wire (e.g. West Street in downtown Indianapolis, hideous), outdated strip malls with parking facing the street. A dead Fall Creek with Sand Islands instead of a current.
Driving from IND airport along I-70 or Washington Street makes visitors want to leave. Take a hint from Columbus OH for neighborhood and tree preservation, from Denver for parkway streetscapes and strong historic neighborhoods — it gas to be more than downtown.
I assume that the new Indianapolis Economic Development Corporation will be doing something different than the Chamber or Indianapolis Downtown Inc? Or is there some subtext here of taking control from the Chamber and giving it to state appointees?

It would be great if this new group could fix the byzantine, slow, and unresponsive permitting process. It would also be good to see our utilities’ responsiveness and cost addressed. It is a difficult decision to build in Marion County versus Boone or one of the other counties that actually want you to come and work with you to get your project approved instead of either throwing active roadblocks, driving costs up, or plain indifference and disregard for what they are costing you both in time and $.
Good points…not to mention the hurdle of minimum hourly pay rate to get incentives the City hypocritically doesn’t meet.
Funny how things come full circle…this is how the city operated its economic development function in the 80’s and 90’s till better minds decided to fold it under the Chamber umbrella. Good staff currently and Jim Schellinger has some good experience, let’s hope the new format works!
