The new proposed SU-47 zoning requirements are stronger and more stringent than any other zoning district in Marion County. A moratorium would solve nothing but allowing time for the opposition to drag their same old, same old, arguments out longer, and it would not solve a thing. The MDC has done the right thing!
What they are wanting to put into place is stricter than many industrial districts now. You have housing less than 400 feet from many manufacturers all across the county. It is now up to the City Council to make the final call.
I have been following all of this. seems like the same folks keeps showing up to protest in their red shirts with talking points. they are becoming more disrespectful and louder and disruptive in an attempt to cause soical unrest. Seems like a nice niche business for them. There seems to be 3-5 actual residents who are concerned and have valid concerns about data centers and other public hearings as is their right. I can’t say that data centers are good or bad but this chaos is so un-Indiana like and embarassing as a citizen. Will we allow the people who are the loudest make policy? bring back respect and honor and integrity.
Data centers and AI will be the defining political issue of the next decade. The party that is able to tap into and attempt to assuage the justified concern and fear with good policy will win majorities across the country. Or, maybe the uni-party will win and both parties will just kowtow to the industry. Probably the latter.
Those demanding a moratorium apparently do not understand that they are getting most of what they want: the chance to make their case against the development.
Rezoning to the new district will require three approvals:
First, a case would go before the MDC Hearing Examiner for public hearing and her decision to recommend approval or denial.
Then the full MDC considers her recommendation. If she recommends denial, the applicant can appeal. If she recommends approval, remonstrators can appeal. The result of either kind of appeal is another hearing in front of the MDC.
If the MDC approves, the rezoning ordinance is sent to the City-County Council for action. There, if the district councilor calls it down, another hearing and vote is required.
