  1. The fact that cameras which detect red light runners and speeding drivers are illegal in Indiana is proof that Republican state legislators put safety second to any other consideration. The blood resulting from deaths and crashes is clearly on their hands.

    1. There is some SMALL momentum with the construction cameras, which sent out how many warnings and tickets so far? I’d LOVE to see this expanded to more areas and the fines progressively larger (and not capped at $150).

Bring on the red light cameras, we’re beyond needing them at this point.

  2. All I can say is better late than never.

I don’t know how many other Indy residents have encouraged the city to embrace better traffic light management to improve safety, reduce travel times, and curtail harmful emissions. Personally, I have tried over 5 years to encourage more effort in this area. For years, other cities have taken advantage of better, cheaper technology to realize the benefits of improved traffic flows. This is low hanging fruit to improve citizen satisfaction.

The response from City government has been anything but an exemplar of efficiency. Frequent staff changes, lack of clarity around decision-making authority and how citizens can add their voice, failed promises to follow up, and a complete lack of follow-through from my City Councilor who said he would have a look at my efforts and weigh in but never did are indicative of a government slow to embrace innovations that others have successfully adopted.

I’m glad Tucker Born is on the job and that resources have been added to the equation. Beside the Mayor’s Action Line, which I found unresponsive, it would be good to know how citizens can add their voice to set priorities for this work. I am happy to see the abysmally programmed traffic signals on the 82nd/86th Street corridor targeted for improvements. I was disappointed, however (if I read the map correctly), that the area around Keystone at the Crossing is not at initial target. Drivers in in this highly trafficked area frequently stop at 5 separate lights when traversing the short distance from one side to the other. If this is because other zones have more significant safety issues, I understand the prioritization. But when looking for high return-on-investment opportunities to save time and expense, I hope drivers in this zone experience Mr. Born’s vision of green lights before too long.
