This “lapse in security” had a far reaching effect, many small businesses who used Changed Healthcare for billing went out of business as they could not sustain day-to-day operations due to the disruption of their billing processes. Yer United Healthcare seemed to not care about what their actions wreaked on the healthcare economy.
I am a retired network engineer. I spent the first 2/3 of my lifelong career making sure all of the computers could talk to each other. The last third of my career was spent making sure computers could not talk. Working in a hospital and then the local power company, computer systems were critical and lives were on the line if they didn’t work. Both businesses had accreditation bodies that made sure that minimum cybersecurity policies were in place. Owning and hosting IT services and securing those services is complex and expensive. It takes skilled people and a commitment from management to make sure it happens correctly and isn’t just some glossy veneer.
I just got a notice yesterday in the mail about some health care company I had never heard but one of my providers must use on the back end, about a data breach. As compensation for my data being exposed, they are going to sign me up with credit monitoring from a company I’ve never heard of. So, my decision is do I give more personal information to another company that may or may not have questionable cybersecurity policies. Unless there is a some accreditation body enforcing rules, there is very little guarantee that a company has implemented reasonable cybersecurity polices. Lawsuits that force faithless actors out of business may be the only way to go.
PS If you want a AI proof job become a network engineer with a specialty in cybersecurity. AI will make the cybersecurity part harder and easier, but no AI will ever be able to install a new piece of equipment or plug in a cable.
