I am familiar with both alumni voting processes as both a Purdue and IU alumnus, and I’ve voted in both. While it might be in the fine print, I was never aware that Purdue Alumni Association members are merely recommending the trustees they elect to the Governor. When is the last time the Governor has refused the candidates they elected, and how often has that happened?
In the Purdue election, I also get to vote on a Trustee position reserved only for the School of Agriculture I graduated from, in addition to voting each year on a university wide Trustee.
At IU, alumni got to vote regardless of their financial situation. At Purdue, alumni can only vote if they join and maintain their membership in the Alumni Association, which requires an annual payment. If % of alumni voting was the real concern, the legislature could have offered a similar arrangement to IU Alumni, but instead went straight to completely eliminating their right to vote.
As an ISU alum I have no say in the BOD, the president submits the candidtes to the governor for approval cutting us out totally.
