Not a good idea. Not.
omg…much like his “god” it will take decades to recover from Braun’s knuckle dragging policies.
It never really was about “conservative values”
NEVER a good idea to give any one person total control over anything.
Such a fall from the party of small government. Today’s republicans want their fingers in everything.
Sen. Bray pretends that this is about low participation in IU alumni trustee elections. Is participation really that much lower at IU than at Purdue, Ball State and ISU? Got any stats to back up that statement, or any elaboration on why alleged low participation necessitates canceling elections entirely? If you really believe IU alumni don’t pay attention to their alma mater, why ram this change through in the dead of night?
IU is not a monolithic entity, nor should it be. Universities, be they public or provide, must ensure the academic freedom of its students and faculties to explore, to debate, to disagree.
The board of a university is responsible for determining the school’s strategic direction, approving policies, budgets, and major decisions, ensuring the institution’s financial health and legal compliance, and serving as a fiduciary duty to protect the institution’s resources and reputation.
Giving a governor – any governor – the power to hand-pick its board creates the risk that such a board will the views and desires of the one person who has appointed them. And that endangers to freedom to explore, debate, and disagree.
We already see how the Trump Loyalty Oath has created chaos and turmoil in the federal government, and how it is affecting our country. We don’t need to replicate that on the IU – or any – state college campus.
Lord Acton fulfilled once again – sad for all Hoosiers
It was Hoosiers that elected this knucklehead and continue to elect republicans so that we have a super majority in the legislature that pretty much does whatever it wants too. Until Hoosiers wake up and understand that continually elected these people is hurting our state it will only get worse.
More people don’t vote at all than voted for either party !
I think we should rename our state “North Mississippi.”
This will create a board that is “more rounded”? Can someone please explain how that would work?
So the three trustees targeted by this appear to be
Jill Burnett
Donna Spears
Vivian Winston
since Braun now has the authority to “at any time” remove and replace a board member who was previously elected by the IU alumni. Question is, what have any/all of them done to justify such targeting?
