The construction of a new stadium isn’t failing because of Joe Hogsett. It’s failing because Ersal Ozdemir failed twice to land an MLS franchise and, presumably, Joe Hogsett has been told that Ozdemir is never going to be the majority owner of an MLS franchise. So when Ozdemir came back to the city seeking yet more money for a stadium project for a team destined to always be second class, the plug was pulled.
Maybe Huber is being brought in to try to convince the city to fill the funding gap that caused Hogsett and the city to pull the plug… since Chuck Surack, for all his love of soccer (sarcasm), hasn’t made one iota difference when it comes to building Eleven Park or landing an MLS franchise. Then again, maybe Huber will pivot and try to land that downtown casino on the Eleven Park site. Indy could maybe become famous worldwide for having a haunted casino.
Huber has a history of success at each career stop. Smart move by the 11.
Michael is a successful leader who brings high energy, high integrity to every endeavor he takes on. He will do likewise here.
Good luck to Michael, the Eleven, and Ersal himself! They’ve all worked hard through such negative publicity and public comment.
I’m no fan of soccer, but apparently many are.
Ersal has been a trail blazer since he and Keystone were the only developers willing to invest and spend during the Obama recession.
the “Obama recession”? When was that? He came into office and inherited the greatest financial crisis since the great depression and over the next 8 years the country pulled itself out of that crisis.

“Obama recession”–is that anything like the “Biden pandemic”?
Just ignore Kevin P. He’s a MAGA troll.
Thanks Kip and David for injecting truth and reality to the conversation. Surprised Kevin didn’t mention and blame the Democrats for the “unfair” gerrymandered Indiana Congressional districts that were written by the Republican super majorities after the 2010 and 2020 census.
I have tremendous respect for Michael and all that he’s accomplished. I’m excited to see the continued success and impact he’ll have in this new role.
“As a fan I have witnessed first-hand the inspiring growth of Indy Eleven and its community of supporters in Indiana.”
What growth? As a ticket holder, I see the temporary stands on the west goal end shrink each season. The east end bleachers left years ago and were replaced with two tents which are not filled to capacity. The team used to fill the grandstands but that hasn’t happened in years. It’s more of a depressing decline than an inspiring growth. Once my high schooler graduates, we will no longer keep our season tickets.
Great. Stay second-class, Indy. No MLS for you!
Injecting politics into this is childish. Will it ever end? As for Ozdemir, he’s had some success and accomplishments, but reliable people (formerly) within the Eleven confirm MLS never took him seriously, that he would never get a franchise. As it is, the Eleven has pretty much fallen off the the local sports radar. Let’s go for MLS, stop the petty bickering, offer a hand to Mr. Ersal to participate, and put on a united and realistic front. A $1B+ development with a 20,000 seat stadium for minor league soccer in what turned out to be a graveyard was always just a pipe dream. I believed in those plans as much as I had faith in those ever-changing/never-happening plans to revamp Lafayette Square.
Why would the potential ownership group (presumably the Simons) offer a hand to Ersal? What does he bring to land an MLS team? If MLS has already rejected him, then it seems like he would bring nothing but baggage.
