  1. Indiana can’t afford the infrastructure we DO have – countless highways, roads and bridges and dangerously underfunded (with the governor pushing for yet ANOTHER road (that he would profit from personally – and we couldn’t afford to maintain) – state workers can’t get consistent cost of living wages (but we can afford a helipad and additional security fencing for the governor at his private home because he CHOOSES not to live in the governor’s residence) Almost weekly we have yet another story of corruption from the Secretary of State’s office, Lieutenant Governor’s office, etc…………we’re told we CAN’T afford to fund school lunch programs, books for children, basic tenants’ rights (I believe Indiana hasn’t improved from the 2nd worse on the nation) or healthcare – BUT we CAN afford to give MILLIONS in tax breaks and infrastructure improvements for a billionaire owned sports franchise across the state line? Indiana HAS great potential to be a leader in the Great Lakes region – but forking over potential 10s of millions of dollars for this thing sends a message to the citizens IF they are listening.

  2. Fill in Wolf Lake? That whole area is already environmentally compromised thanks to big steel. Wolf Lake is a nationally recognized gem of an ecosystem and natural water quality infrastructure. I can’t believe that the residents in Hammond aren’t screaming against this and I doubly cannot believe that the Mayor of Hammond things that is a good idea.
But who needs clean water or bird habitats? Who needs recreation for those who have the least? Oh that’s right. Those things aren’t important when it comes to the almighty dollar, right?
Just no. Even if the Bears were to come to Indiana, Wolf Lake is not the place. Just say no.

  3. Agreed with all of this. There is no way this would become a net positive for Hoosiers, meanwhile even if the stadium gets built and the team relocates, how long would the Bears even stay there? Then you have a dated giant stadium with no real use sitting in Northern Indiana.

    1. There’s one way this is a net positive – if the Bears build and own the stadium and the Indiana contribution is limited to infrastructure, such as a new South Shore station, highway exits/entrances, etc. that benefits other people or businesses. Generally, that’s not the structure that sports teams want and politicians are far too willing to include giveaways funded by tax dollars.

  4. For those with a short memory – The Chicago White Sox threatened to move unless they had a new Stadium – Illinois held off to the very last minute before caving in. This is a ploy by the Bears to get a Tax Break for the new Arlington Heights Stadium. Indiana is being used. Can’t believe the IBJ is falling for this scam.

  5. I would bet if the Bears win next week’s playoff game, after beating Packers last week, the Illinois legislature and Chicago will soften their view and their checkbooks, to build their own stadium.
