Would rather use $1B in public bonds to clean up and redevelop the closing NIPSCO plant in Michigan City; redevelop the closing state prison in Michigan City; and further improve the South Shore Line.
The lakeshore between Burns Harbor and the Michigan State Line has an incredible amount of potential, but state lawmakers would rather spend money chasing the Bears to score points against Illinois or whatever.
PREACH
Oh Yeah Robert! Even in the very unlikely event the Bears did move across the street to Hammond, they will still be Chicago’s team. You really think they’ll be good Hoosiers?? Why does it take the Bears for Braun and state lawmakers to invest so much attention into Northwest Indiana? So many people there, and so much potential. I agree, develop and clean up the lakeshore, its days of heavy industry are in the rear view mirror. All that’s left is a former industrial wasteland with environmental damage of the worst kind. Imagine a cleaned-up lakefront (yes, it will likely take billions to do so) attracting residential, business, and park like development. Now THAT would be visionary. I fear the Statehouse lacks that kind of vision. Hammond, Gary, East Chicago, Michigan City — so much potential if only people could see past the smokestacks and urban decay.
One word describes the situation, Democrat. The Region is and has been democrat for decades so little interest is paid to it by the republican lead state government. The republicans would love to poke a stick in the eye of the democrat lead state of Illinois and City of Chicago. Essentially a double poke at Illinois and their State and City leadership.
Northern Indiana is being played by the Bears. I would encourage the folks in Hammond to start talking about pulling some or all their chips off the table. I really don’t think is a good investment for the state. My hunch is the Bears are going to ultimately go to Arlington Heights, where they’ve made a HUGE land acquisition investment.
The Arlington Heights land probably has more value for uses other than a football stadium. Bears could likely sell for a profit.
I agree that we (as in the State of IN) shouldn’t be subsidizing the Bears.
