As a subscriber you can listen to articles at work, in the car, or while you work out. Subscribe NowCarol Comer, the chief of staff at the Indiana Department of Environmental Management, has been promoted to commissioner by Gov. Mike Pence, the state announced Tuesday.
Comer will take the position Friday, replacing Tom Easterly, who announced his retirement in mid-July after 10 years at the helm. Easterly is exiting as the longest-serving commissioner in IDEM’s 29-year history.
Prior to becoming chief of staff in February, Comer was IDEM’s general counsel for almost two years, overseeing about 30 attorneys and support staff.
Previously, she spent eight years as senior administrative law judge for the Indiana Board of Tax Review and a year as administrative law judge with the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission.
Comer started her environmental law career with a six-year stint at Plews Shadley Racher & Braun in Indianapolis. She also spent two years at Lewis and Roca LLP in Phoenix.
Comer has business and law degrees from Indiana University, IU School of Public and Environmental Affairs and IU Robert H. McKinney School of Law.
Replacing Comer as chief of staff will be Bruno Pigott, deputy chief of staff and assistant commissioner in the Office of Water Quality, where he has worked since 2005.
