Both Purdue and IU are a multi-faceted asset that can help save downtown.
Agreed. No reason Indy can’t be a college town and not take away from the main campuses.
Downtown is doing quite well – it doesn’t need to be ‘saved’. Come visit sometime.
Jason, the folks at IU and Purdue would appear to disagree with you. They’ve fought Indianapolis having a major college campus for over 50 years.

IU recently made a change that will have a major impact on the perception of the strength of the Indianapolis campus as an important research center. Previously, IU reported research grants funding work at the Medical Center through the flagship campus in Bloomington. Soon, the value of those research grants will be reported from the Indianapolis campus. It is true that the powers that be in Bloomington have done their best to be sure Indianapolis does not eclipse the main campus. But the potential is there and it has been recognized.
The area around the Canal has been mismanaged for years, the State Archives building being forced by the Canal being only the latest example. It should/could have been much more than what it is.
I agree. Why are there not restaurants, bars and shops on the canal? I know it gets cold here but the canal is basically just a walking path when it could be a landmark for business.
Yeah the downtown canal, while an asset, has had potential that has never been fully realized…nowhere near actually. The university(ies) are certainly a positive, putting more people down there — maybe — but not many places to go to. It can be a a real dead zone. For as much work that has gone into it — the space is kind of a waste and an afterthought.
Cool! I think the more active participation by the Universities when it comes to community development has the potential to really make the Canal, the White River, and Indiana Avenue truly vibrant, welcoming spaces. I’m excited for the future.
There is so much vacant land north of the Capitol currently being used for surface parking, surrounded by Capitol, Michigan, Illinois and Vermont Streets. Not sure why this has not been developed for housing. Hopefully since Purdue and IU are on a mission to develop housing this site would be perfect. What a waste such a void in an urban area.
