  1. Wow… So all of these years, there has been demand for expanded facilities, but IU and Purdue have both been sandbagging because they “might have to share”, but now it’s IU on one side and Purdue on the other, it’s all stops out and full steam ahead!?!

The split should have happened years ago…

  2. If the most recent announcement about Indiana Avenue is any indication, Purdue is just going to turn the entire Canal area into a giant surface parking lot.

    1. Which is exactly what IU did to the whole campus area 40 years ago, before building many new buildings.

Universities (and health care systems) have a much longer acquisition and development time horizon than most businesses and institutions. They don’t buy today to build next year.

    2. Then be honest about that. Purdue is engaging in bad faith development practices out the gate on their new campus. Don’t lie to the City and to the community that you’re going to build a nice, new apartment building on the Canal and then say, “Just kidding, it’s a parking lot.”

The structural reinforcements required to park cars on that platform are significant. This was clearly a decision made a long time ago, but Purdue continued to lie and state that they were building housing. I don’t buy that this is a “short term use.” This is going to be a surface parking lot drawing no activity and collecting no taxes for at least a decade, if not more. A nice, new dead edge along a premier public space.

      Shame on Purdue.

    3. Purdue was catching grief for proposing the 12 story high rise from the local preservationist. The neighborhood preservationist did NOT want a building that size that close the Madame C.J. Walker building.

  3. Wow, the Canal project on hold leaving a foundation and parking lot on this highly visible site. Not good planning should have left the existing building in place at least it would look better than what is proposed.
