Michael, have you secured the funding for the butterfly park you want built, instead of Buckees on 65 South?
That’s going to be a tremendous loss for that neighborhood. I know many people who relied on that store.
Rea— not being snarky. Serious question. How is it a loss for the neighborhood? The Walmart Market on Keystone is 2 miles away. The Kroger in Southern Plaza is 3 miles. For the oh crap, we need milk and bread, moments, walk to the CVS across the street from Safeway.
I’m going to piggyback off of Chuck W.’s comment and also say there is an Aldi on the north side of the Garfield Park neighborhood.
More proof that small neighborhood grocery stores just cannot compete with the giants. Typically what keeps this kind of store in business (and I include the Safeway at 56th and Illinois) is the deli/prepared foods they sell at high margins.
The Aldi is about a mile from almost all of Garfield Park neighborhood.
I know at least three households of elderly people that walk to that Safeway. But I guess they can walk two or three miles to the other stores. And I don’t know if you’ve ever purchased perishables or groceries at CVS but they’re about twice the price of grocery stores.

The store is probably closing because of, crime, theft, and hard to find quality employees. Not to mention people hanging out in front of the store that make people ( especially women ) very uncomfortable.
And yes trying to compete against the big boys is difficult, but doable.
Under your Dem pretense, just open a government owned and operated grocery store.
Keith, you have me mistaken for someone who supports government subsidy for grocery stores. I don’t.
Rea, other people know those elderly folks and some of you could offer to drive them to Aldi. Or show them how to order on line from Kroger for delivery. (And they can still walk in the neighborhood to get out of the house.)
I live in the area and will not go to that grocery or the gas station across the street. Both places just let gnarly people congregate outside at all hours of the day. People feel unsafe. I’m sorry they are closing…but when they care more for the people slumped over or stealing their products over their customers no one is surprised.
