I can see that Mr Freeman’s goal is to make money for the state.
I wonder if Mr Freeman has ever visited a Casino? They are designed to suck people in and keep them there in the dark. They don’t want patrons to leave the facility. They are self contained unto themselves. Nothing happens in or around a casino by design. Look at the Shelbyville Casino. Years into the project and there is no development around it! Nothing. From the view of good urban design, casinos are a disaster. They create blank dead space around them.
If you want hurt the city, force a casino into the downtown. If your only goal is to generate state tax revenue, then I can see why you would support this.
“The new tax revenue generated by an Indianapolis casino could be used to provide much-needed funding to address Indianapolis’ disintegrating roads. The General Assembly also could use the additional funds to continue lowering Hoosiers’ taxes, including more cuts to the state income tax or property taxes.”
It’s adorable he’d even offer the first sentence, knowing the money would go the latter. Freeman must think we are rubes. Remember when we were sold the lottery on the basis of the money going to education? That lasted not very long either.
Visit Indy offered a lukewarm endorsement of the idea and even they acknowledged some of the conventions we bring to the city weren’t fans of the idea. Go visit the casino in downtown St. Louis or Detroit and say to yourself, yeah, this is what downtown Indianapolis needs. This will keep the FFA around.
“My colleagues and I want to see Indiana prosper.”
That’s adorable. Republicans have been in charge for 20 years and they’re running out of people to blame.
I visited Detroit recently and was unaware they had a casino and I stayed in (what was left of) downtown Detroit!
That seems to reinforce my point that casinos in an urban environment create dead space around them.
I didn’t mention my worst case scenario, the possabilaiy they create a nuisance that requires extra policing.
