Limiting meetings to a handful a couple days per month, without minimum thresholds for what kinds of projects should even be scheduled – all of which must take place prior to filing, is not the solution the City thinks that it is.
Especially considering the complicated (and sometimes conflicting/contradictory provisions in the almost 600 pages of) zoning code; little can actually be built as by right. Add to that the recent limit on the number of zoning cases allowed to be scheduled per hearing without increasing hearing capacity, and it’s a recipe for slowing down, not speeding up, new and infill development.
Agreed. An example is the recent change in how the City permits multi unit houses. It appears to be at the whim of the administrator, who doesn’t even have much of a city planning background.
I know we all don’t see eye to eye often, but this is one we solidly agree on. Indianapolis needs infill housing. Lots of it. Especially where existing infrastructure has the capacity to absorb people, such as Center Township, which was built to handle 350,000 people.
The State’s recent changes to property and income tax is making it all the more important that we have a population and resources which is distributed responsibly. Our only way to meaningful revenue growth in a low-tax situation is through new people without new infrastructure.
