I think this is an idea that needs a good public discussion. My liberal acquaintances may be horrified at the idea, but I’m not. The American social contract requires some give and take, which probably includes some restraint on the “freedom” to sleep on the sidewalk, accost passersby for money, and defecate in alleys without regard for public health and the common good.
There may be a way to do this in a respectful manner…not with police in masks and battle gear…but in a way that gets people housed in some setting whether secure/confined or not. Those of us who are a certain age can remember that this issue came to the forefront in the 90s when the States emptied out the mental hospitals without creating a viable alternative.
