10 thoughts on “Trump raises tariffs on Canada by 10% over Reagan ad

  1. What a joke this administration is! For this reason; “Because of their serious misrepresentation of the facts, and hostile act,” we raise tarrifs on our neighbor. Well, when it comes to misrepresentation of facts, this administration has all of the experts as they do it with every word.

  2. Reagan was a Republican . TRUMP and his MAGA CULT are not Republicans . So it is no surprise TRUMP would posthumously purge Reagan’s comments about tarriffs that MAGA CULT TRUMP loves to unilaterally impose

    1. Coll story Charles! Any word of how the Province of Ontario’s advertisement cut out the most critical portion of the Reagan quote–that the tariffs were retaliatory tariffs from supposed United States allies who were abusing us economically with their own tariffs, and we were just supposed to take it up the keister.

The same today. From an economic perspective, Canada deserves Uncle Sam to stomp its skull until it’s 4.5 feet underground, then kick the teeth in from its exposed head. Economically, of course!

Beyond that, the rest of the abuse that the hapless Canadians receive is coming from their own Liberal leadership. But then, is any country right now a better example of collective Stockholm Syndrome?

  3. The worst part is Regan did not like tariffs and was reluctant to use them. But a bully can’t stand to have somebody contradict him and for Trump, a master manipulator, there is a the truth, that the speech was about imposing tariffs on Japan, bit the only message everyone heard was “the ad was a lie” and not that Regan didn’t like tariffs.

Here are the words of an economist that worked for the Regan White House on International economic policy:
    https://paulkrugman.substack.com/p/no-ronald-reagan-didnt-love-tariffs

    Regan did not like tariffs.

    1. Who said that Trump is overjoyed to tariff the mustelids to our north? Only people with a steady diet of CNN (the 300 or so remaining people who watch it) would believe that.

Canada has been subjecting the US to abusive tariffs for nearly a half-century. Why?

This minor, frozen, second world country can’t compete easily on its own (in no small part because, sociopolitically, it’s a facsimile of every country in Western Europe, but without their charm or history or mild weather), but rather than forge policy that would help it harness its abundant resources to compete with Uncle Sam, they just tariff the neighbor who subsidizes their self defense so their can replace out a genuine military for welfare gimmedats.
