Reminder, if not for the Simon family, the Pacers aren’t here. Remember, no one else wanted the team in 1983. Kind of hard to land all these sports businesses and events when you can’t even keep the one major franchise you have, ya think?
That doesn’t entitle them to a lifetime of free gifts but I’d argue the relationship between the Simon’s and Indianapolis has been mutually beneficial. To your point, Fever paid for the building, we gave them the land, Simon’s turned around and did something with the eyesore that was the CSX building, and the Simon family is the only local family well-capitalized enough to land us a soccer franchise.
JOE B. Excellent points you bring up. A lot of people don’t realize the impact that sporting events and professional teams have on a city like Indy. Indy has developed itself as a convention and sporting event city. So much so that other peer cities has taken a page from our playbook. The first thing people want to bring up is the use of taxes dollars. A fair argument but pointless one at the same time when considering sports is apart of Indys economy. How else do you get tourist to come to Indy if it weren’t for the conventions and sporting events? I also can see the political aspect in taking The Bears from Illinois. I bet Trump would love to stick it to Pritzker for Illinois losing its franchise to a Republican state like Indiana.
Has anyone asked the Colts or the CIB how they feel about this? A move such as this couldn’t possibly be in their best interest from a fan base prospective. What other events such as Final 4’s, NFL combine, concerts, etc, might this compete against and thus hurt the viability of downtown Indianapolis?
The largest problem the Colts have isn’t a stadium near Chicago. It’s their fan base figuring out they’re not a good franchise and ceasing buying season tickets and caring about the team.
A new stadium will get one Super Bowl (and only one) because that’s what the NFL does. It would pull from the Chicago market, not the Indianapolis market.
