It used to be that when the government “ran out of money” and had to “shut down,” what actually happened was the federal workforce was categorized as “essential” and “non-essential.” The former stayed on the job, with pay, and the latter was furloughed, without pay.”
Trump’s MAGA Party prefers instead to go nuclear with the situation and shut everything down while simultaneously firing – not just furloughing – civil servants. The goal? Destroy America. There is nothing about anything Trump and his lapdogs propose that is making America “great again.”
Aside from the shutdown aspect of this story – the real idiocy is to impose tariffs on China and be surprised when they decide to punitively stop importing our agricultural crops thus crippling our farmers. We are shooting ourselves in the foot, and then it’s the average Joe whose tax dollars are going to make Trump supporters whole. Add in the ridiculous $40 billion of financial support for Argentina, and the new beef supports, and it’s salt in the wound for farmers.
Finally, the Argentinian measures are merely done to prop up Trump’s like-minded dictator, Milei. Our “investment” in the markets/ currency will shortly go down the tubes. Top it off with recent stories indicating it’s being done to prop up the Argentine peso just long enough for Trump’s wealthy investors in Argentina’s debt so they can get out before their investments turn sour. And it’s, again, you and me subsidizing the wealthy.
It’s even more stupid when it’s the repeat from 8 years ago under Trump 1.0. If buying off the farmers then paid off with enough votes, it must be worth doing again.
