All well and good, the events, the buzz, the visiting executives… But why not also invest more in walkability north of the convention and sports district, where more people actually live and work? Why not make that area somewhere people want to experience and stay… or dare I say, relocate to, instead of just coming downtown for a few hours and then retreating to distant cities and suburbs? Can we please use some of the big bucks now to make our downtown residential and business areas more attractive for residents and visitors, not overly focusing on facilities for sports fans and out-of-towners? If we want lasting civic vitality, let’s not settle for a city that just entertains visitors for a day or two. We need a city more welcoming, desireable and attractive for people who want to work, stay, and live here for the long haul. Billions paid for sport facilities, but we can’t pave the streets, plant trees, or even paint the crosswalks. Does it have to be either or? Why not both? If so much money flows into the city coffers from these activities, can we siphon some of to improve overall quality of life downtown. What else are those dollars paying for besides the stadiums themselves and the new mega-hotel, cuz I’m not seeing it?
Paul, the problem is that most of the tax money from this area of downtown does not flow to the City but is diverted by the PSDA to fund and maintain the facilities (Gainbridge, LOS and the convention center). I would propose a fraction of those dollars be used to address other downtown issues – homelessness, cleanliness, safety, etc. This might require legislative approval so bipartisan support would be necessary but it seems doable. If Braun is serious (a big IF, I know), then this should be a legislative priority.
