I had a evening news route, started with 25 deliveries and grew it to 60+. I took care of my customers, paper in the door etc.
It was definitely a different time as I knew all of my customers by name as they did me and my parents never worried about me going to collect my route.
My customers were always generous to me at Christmas.
Fond memories of my childhood.

+1
I also had an afternoon paper route Monday thru Saturday, and early morning on Sundays.
I started when I was twelve years old.
I also knew all of my customers and always did everything I could. My customers always treated me good, especially at Christmas. The only time I didn’t like going out was on extremely cold days or heavy rain. Like the Postal workers, rain, shine, cold it didn’t matter. I always delivered my papers on time.
I also won a lot of prizes getting new customers to subscribe.
I learned a lot about customer service at a young age.
Like you, my parents never worried about me being out in the late afternoons or real early on Sunday mornings. It was a different world back then.
Sadly, that very important first job and the fact that we had real newspapers is long gone.
When I tell my kids that I roamed the streets at 6am every morning by myself delivering papers, and went into stranger’s houses for several minutes every other week and had to chat up the adults while they got their money and I made change for them, their heads explode. It really was a different time not so long ago.
I had two paper routes for a period of 9 years. I started with an afternoon route (Evansville Press) at age 9 and kept it a few years. That route was delivered by me and my older brothers for nearly 20 years. While I still had the afternoon route, I started carrying a morning route (Evansville Courier). It was a larger route and I kept it until my senior year in high school. My customers were great – they paid on time and tipped as best they could. Many of them hired me to shovel their walks and driveways during the snowy winters we had in the late 70s. I learned a lot, but mostly to provide top-notch, reliable customer service. I took pride in not receiving complaints about my service. If there was a problem, I tried to fix it as best I could.
