Spring gets all the buzz for fresh starts, but it’s not the only season for finding something new.
The fall arts and entertainment season in central Indiana offers multiple chances to catch world-premiere productions.
At the Phoenix Theatre Cultural Centre, “Everybody’s Favorite Mothers” will debut in September as the latest work by former Indiana Repertory Theatre playwright-in-residence James Still. In October, the Phoenix will host the world premiere of “The Meridian Cafe,” an Indianapolis tale written by Obie Award winner Lucy Thurber and produced by American Lives Theatre.
Dance Kaleidoscope plans to showcase a new version of “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” by Dallas-based choreographer Joshua L. Peugh, in October. That’s the same month the Gregory Hancock Dance Theatre will present “Salem” — a new one-act ballet with music by Connecticut-based composer Cory Gabel.
At the movies, the Heartland Film Festival snagged the festival world premiere of “Jimmy,” a biopic based on actor Jimmy Stewart’s transition from serving in World War II to starring in “It’s a Wonderful Life.” You can catch “Jimmy” Oct. 8 at the Scottish Rite Cathedral.
If you’re looking for tried-and-true concert experiences, four touring artists who are at least 90 years old are headed to central Indiana: Willie Nelson, Buddy Guy, Herb Alpert and Marilyn Maye.
More than 150 events receive a spotlight in this action-packed guide. It’s important to remember, of course, that my selections serve only as a departure point.
Much more is out there for audiences to explore, and it’s exciting to note that more than 85 venues and performing arts organizations are represented among these curated picks.
