‘Magic/Bird’ box office report

How's "Magic/Bird," the Broadway play about Larry Bird and his buddy, Magic Johnson, doing on Broadway?

Well, expectations were never high for "Book of Mormon" style numbers. Still, the accounting week ending March 22 didn't show much promise. At $166,223 the play barely beat out the new comedy  "The Lyons," which was still in previews, to keep it from being the lowest-grossing show of the week.

"Magic/Bird" played to just over 55 percent capactiy (a drop-off from the previous week) at an average ticket price of $34. That's only about 19 percent of the potential gross for the Longacre Theatre.

At this time of year, many shows hold out in hopes of Tony nominations, which help boost box office. At "Magic/Bird," however, the only hope there may be for a Featured Actor nod for Peter Scolari, who plays multiple roles.

Is there a chance that sports fans just take a little more time to warm up to theater? (For my review of the play, click here. For a report from the opening night red carpet, click here.)
