In India, the National Film Awards give prizes for Best Playback Singing. What’s a playback singer? That’s the person who records soundtrack music so movie actors can lip-sync it. While there would be limited use for such talents in Hollywood, there is huge demand in Bollywood movies, where musicals remain a staple in the cinematic diet. Shreya Ghoshal, with scores of such credits, also has shelves of awards to show for her mostly anonymous efforts. But with playback singers treated as stars rather than secrets, Ghoshal has earned a strong following.
