Is IDEM trying to do too much?

April 7, 2008
Environmental groups are charging that the Indiana Department of Environmental Management is putting a higher priority on jobs and economic development than its fundamental mission of protecting human health and the environment.

The Post-Tribune in Merrillville reported over the weekend that environmentalists complain the state agency in particular has been soft on BP and U.S. Steel in northwest Indiana.

Both IDEM commissioner Tom Easterly and Gov. Mitch Daniels have said they want the agency to do both â?? improve personal incomes and protect the environment.

What do you think? Is it possible to protect our health and the environment while improving job quality â?? especially in an area like the Region that depends so much on heavy industry?
