Misery all around with gas prices

April 14, 2008
Rising gas prices keeps making news.

Independent truckers complain that expensive diesel fuel could force them out of business.

The Recreational Vehicle Industry Association says gas prices and economic uncertainty are hurting sales. RV sales were off nearly 10 percent last year, and are projected to fall again this year â?? critical for the Elkhart area because thousands of people in that region manufacture more than half the nationâ??s RVs.

Democratic candidate for governor Jill Long Thompson wants to cap gas sales taxes when the price tops $2.75 a gallon, a proposal that primary election opponent Jim Schellinger says misses the larger issue of addressing rising fuel costs.

With misery all around, should government do something to keep prices low? Economists say rising prices force conservation and exploration of other forms of energy.
