Tomorrow is the big day for supporters of the Wishard Health Services referendum, the vote they need for Wishard to issue
bonds for a new, $754 million hospital near IUPUI.
If forces lined up pro and con are any indication, it will pass
by a "comfortable" margin, says IUPUI political scientist Bill Blomquist. There’s virtually no organized opposition,
while Wishard enjoys broad and deep support from former mayors to other hospital systems in the area.
Opponents might have been able to kill the referendum had they mustered the firepower to play up
their concerns about higher taxes, Blomquist says.
As it is, the outcome probably will be obvious
by 8 p.m., he says. “I don’t think it’s going to be a late-night nail-biter.”
