Janitors, charges and Islamic law

November 14, 2007

It’s been a busy day for the movement in Indianapolis to organize janitors under the Service Employees International Union.

The union announced that it plans to begin negotiating with several janitorial firms operating in the Indianapolis area—a huge victory for the union.

An interfaith group has taken its campaign in support of the union to Islamic investors.

And an Indianapolis janitorial firm that has become a lightning rod for the union, Executive Management Services, plans to slap the union with 33 charges of unfair labor practices.

Are the union’s tactics heavy-handed? Is Executive Management Services shortchanging its workers?
