olympicsThe medallists aren’t the only ones smiling at the Beijing Olympics. Officials for NBC are absolutely giddy. After two nights of coverage, NBC is averaging a 16.2 rating and 30 percent U.S. audience share, according to New York-based Nielsen Media. That’s a 22 percent increase from Athens in 2004.

The Beijing games are on track to become the most watched Olympics ever, NBC officials said. More than 114 million total viewers have tuned in to NBC thus far to watch the games, according to Nielsen figures. That’s up 4 million from the same time period of the Atlanta games in 1996, and almost 20 million more than Athens.

Demonstrating the growing power of the Internet, NBC Web traffic is through the roof for this Olympics. Through the first two days, NBCOlympics.com has 132.6 million page views, a 641 percent increase over the Athens games, which tallied 17.9 million page views in its first two days.
