Snubbing of ‘queen of the skies’ to save millions: Airport decides it can’t justify taxiway upgrades with FedEx cancellation of ‘super-jumbo’ Airbus A380

March 12, 2007

Not only did airport tenant FedEx cancel its order for the cargo version of the “superjumbo” last November, but no other carriers have indicated they’ll likely use the super-jumbo here, said airport Director Patrick Dooley. Nor, Dooley added, is there a compelling case to be made for taxiway upgrades merely as a contingency for A380’s being diverted here occasionally from Chicago’s O’Hare International or other airports. So managers are removing all references to the A380 in a long-range airport plan…

Tax break would reward patent producers: Indiana legislators view bill as way to attract young, innovative high-tech companies and solo entrepreneurs

March 12, 2007

A bill weaving its way through the Indiana General Assembly could give the state an edge in attracting and growing the type of high-tech ventures several states covet. Indiana House Bill 1461, introduced by Rep. Brian Bosma, R-Indianapolis, advanced to the Senate after sailing through the House of Representatives on Feb. 26 by a vote of 95-3. The legislation that was referred to the Senate’s Economic Development and Technology Committee would provide a tax incentive that would shield income from…

As sales flag, Nashville again debates closing times

March 8, 2007

An old question has cropped up for shopkeepers in touristy Nashville, namely whether they should keep doors open past the common closing times of 5 to 6 p.m. Some in the Brown County community say customers wouldn’t come, while others maintain that they would, according to the Brown County Democrat. Chamber of Commerce Director Paul […]

WellPoint’s new CEO likely to encounter more obstacles than her predecessor

March 5, 2007

There are no longer any for-profit Blue Cross Blue Shield insurance plans for WellPoint Inc. to acquire as a means of growth.
State governments have effectively stopped those plans from converting to for-profits. That means new CEO Angela F. Braly
can’t keep WellPoint growing by gobbling up competitors.

Please pass the popcorn – and the cash: Not-for-profits hope film encourages more donations

March 5, 2007

But can a movie to be released March 9, “The Ultimate Gift,” inspire the masses to give money to charitable groups? Not-for-profits hope so, although the idea that an emotion-driven Hollywood film can translate into a thoughtful and deliberate giving plan remains to be seen. “Donor education is a very difficult thing to get done. This may be a good start,” said Gene Tempel, executive director of the IU Center on Philanthropy. The movie is based on the book of…

WellPoint banks on the popularity of HSAs: Insurer moves to start bank, offer medical financing

February 26, 2007

To do so the Indianapolis-based health insurer is moving to start its own bank, whose initial role will be to hold and manage its customers’ health savings accounts. An HSA is a relatively new breed of health insurance that places money-and more responsibility-in consumers’ hands. Well-Point bets more and more of its customers will start such accounts in the future. “We expect to see continued strong growth for these products. There is a tremendous amount of interest in the marketplace…

Housing downturn isn’t over for suppliers, experts warn

February 22, 2007

Appliance makers and other suppliers to the housing industry might feel the ripple effect of the housing downturn through the end of this year, according to a Bloomberg report. Sales of new and existing houses fell nearly 10 percent last year, though many observers believe the worst is over for the sales decline. The industry, […]

February 19, 2007

BEHIND THE NEWS: Paul Harris auditor, accused of negligence, to pay $10M

February 19, 2007

It was a long time coming, but attorneys for the defunct Paul Harris women’s apparel chain have won a whopper of a settlement-$9.9 million-with the company’s auditor, PricewaterhouseCoopers. In a lawsuit filed five years ago, they accused PwC of “gross negligence” for failing to detect a $7.5 million inventory shortfall and other accounting breakdowns. They charged that the discovery of the discrepancy in the spring of 2001 scuttled the final stages of negotiations to extricate the Indianapolis-based company from bankruptcy…

BULLS & BEARS: Despite myriad challenges, there’s cause for optimism

February 19, 2007

A week or so ago, I spent a few lovely days at a conference in sunny San Diego while the mercury dropped below zero in the Midwest. For once, my timing was excellent. Weather aside, the days were filled with several thought-provoking speakers. Below is a smattering of takeaways that were interesting enough to share. Paul McCulley, an economist muckitymuck who sits at the right hand of bond investment guru Bill Gross at Pimco, made the observation that the world…

February 16, 2007

The Indianapolis supplier of fluids to the manufacturing industry changed its name because it now operates beyond the Midwest in Mexico, Canada, India and Europe. It is still owned by CEO Paul Bosler Jr. and his three brothers.

Fellow pharmaceutical giants GlaxoSmithKline and Astra Zeneca, both of which are headquartered in London, along […]

NOTIONS: A short history and new meaning of Valentine’s Day

February 12, 2007

Like lots of little baby boomers, I first encountered Valentine’s Day in elementary school. My parents would take me to the dime store or drug store. We’d buy 35 or 40 overly cute cards. Then, using a list provided by my teacher and under Mom’s careful supervision, I’d sign and hand-address one for each classmate. And woe to anyone who excluded even a single soul. We couldn’t, after all, have a little baby boomer feeling unloved. In seventh grade, I…

Jist Publishing, which publishes books about careers from its headquarters near Fort Benjamin Harrison, has been sold to EMC/Paradigm Publishing of St. Paul, Minn., for an undisclosed price. Jist founder and owner Michael Farr said he hired a brokerage in April to find a buyer because it was the right time to do other things […]

Polian’s long and winding road

February 5, 2007

Polian’s long and winding road Architect of Colts’ success worked his way to the top Bill Polian never took the straight line to anything or anywhere. He never had that luxury. The multi-sport schoolboy athlete from the Bronx never had the advantage of an inside track. So he broke in to the National Football League […]

Architect of Colts’ success worked his way to the top

February 5, 2007

Bill Polian, the multi-sport schoolboy athlete from the Bronx, never had the advantage of an inside track. So he broke into
the National Football League the only way he knew how: by outworking and outsmarting the competition. By all accounts, Polian,
64 and now president of the Indianapolis Colts, is still at it.

BEHIND THE NEWS: Royal payoff awaits longtime Noble Roman’s CEO

January 29, 2007

Noble Roman’s Inc. CEO Paul Mobley is a veteran of the pizza wars, collecting his share of bruises along the way. But now his Indianapolis-based company is enjoying heady times-and he’s poised to capitalize in a big, big way. Securities filings show that warrants to purchase stock he amassed during the company’s darkest days now are worth more than $7.5 million-thanks to a recent runup in the company’s shares. His son, President Scott Mobley, also holds a big stash of…

University of Louisville prof lauds Indianapolis

January 22, 2007

Louisville struggles to attract high-end white-collar jobs because it’s stuck in a high-density, “almost European” neighborhood of competing cities that includes Indianapolis, Cincinnati and Nashville, says Paul Coomes, a University of Louisville economist. Indianapolis attracts engineers, scientists and other professionals because its downtown is vibrant and, unlike Louisville’s, isn’t dissected by freeways, Coomes said in […]

ECONOMIC ANALYSIS: Ford was from another era, one walloped by inflation

January 8, 2007

The death of a former president still is a pretty big deal in this country. We can probably thank our first president, one of the most beloved men in the country in his time, for the reverence and respect we hold for those who have sat in the Oval Office. But as the media pundits remark on the political decisions and world events that helped define President Gerald Ford’s administration, I am struck by a retrospective of a different type….
